The Red Spring
“Heaven struck. The holy water turned to blood. I told them it was a judgement. God forgive me, I believed it.”
Brother Anselm Quill, bell-ringer of Ashenmoor

For three nights a storm circled the town, and no rain fell. On the third, a plague rat found the blessed fountain.

By morning Ashenmoor had drunk its fill. By night the dead were walking. Crawling Darkness is a gothic action RPG of blood, bone and bad faith: hack through a sick country, follow the red water to where it comes from, and find out who has been lying about it.

Choose your way into the dark

Four roles. Your own way to survive.

Melee, caster, healer or tank. Clear it all solo, or descend with up to four players—the choice is yours.

Two classes are playable now. Two new concepts are in development and are not yet in the game.

Already in the alpha

A hero worth making.
A world worth exploring.

In game: the Berserker wades into a pack of the dead.
The Feral Berserker

Rage is the only prayer he knows

Every hit feeds his fury. When the bar is full, he goes Berserk: double damage, faster attacks, harder knockback, and the dead thrown aside like straw.

How rage, skills and Oaths work
  • Two ways to fight. The great axe cleaves crowds; sword and shield hold the line and turn every block into rage.
  • The Blood Tree. 23 skills in four rings, from Blood Rush and Reaping Circle to Sundering Blow, War Cry and Blood Moon Roar.
  • Three Instincts. Pick up to three of his passive skills to have active at a time, and swap them on the Blood Tree outside combat.
  • Oaths at rank three. Every active skill swears one of two Oaths that change how it plays: Berserk can last longer, or its knockback can stun. No two berserkers grow alike.

Instinct

Born in the blood. Earned by surviving.

Teachers

The smith, the healer, the watch captain: help them and they show you how.

Relics

Carried out of barrows, mines and graves.

Rites

Sworn at shrines under the blood moon, paid in ribs, idols and tokens.

The Red Spring

Earned chapter by chapter on the main story.

Skills are earned in the world, then learned with Blood Marks One Mark a level, one for every named boss you fell

Concept art: the Funeral Bell, one of her first Rituals.
The Ashen Priest

All flesh becomes ash

A caster of sacred fire and choking ash, the last of a forgotten funeral order. The Priest burns the unquiet dead and turns what is left of them into a weapon.

How Embers, Rites and Rituals work
  • Embers, not rage. The Priest casts from Embers: they start full, burn as you cast and come back over time.
  • Kindle, then cremate. Cinder Bolt builds up to three Kindle stacks on a foe; Cremation spends them for a far stronger blow.
  • Eleven Ash Rites. Cinder Bolt, Breath of Ash, Funeral Pyre, Cremation, Ash Storm, Cinder Step and more, four on the bar, a fifth learned active skill on the rebindable class-action control (R by default), plus four Foundations that stay on once learned. At rank three every rite swears one of two Oaths.
  • Her first Rituals. The Funeral Bell gathers the burning you deal and tolls it out on the dead around it; Sever the Flame binds your Kindle into a barrier. Six Doctrines shape them, and she holds three at a time. Rituals also work online.
  • Build around your equipment. Choose staves, one-handed caster swords and ritual offhands with spell-focused bonuses.
  • Kindle for the whole party. In co-op, your Kindle stacks show on your party's frames, so everyone knows when to strike.

Classes in development

Two new ways
to face the darkness.

Meet The Vessel and The Bound Warden. Explore their character concepts, proposed skills and imagined in-game skill pages.

In development — neither class is playable in the current alpha. Artwork and skills below are concepts and may change.

Four-class fellowship / development concept

Go together.
Or clear it all solo.

Rage, ash, pulse and burden. See how four different playstyles could fight together—and how each could stand alone.

Four class concepts standing together with the Warden’s one owned guardian.
Group concept art · the complete four-class roster is a development study, not the current playable alpha.

The Warden holds the approach. The Priest prepares the ground. The Berserker commits to the opening. The Vessel keeps the fellowship moving. Cooperation creates options; a fixed four-class party is not required.

Co-op

Your friends can jump in at any time

Drop-in online co-op for up to four heroes. Join through Friends, respond to invitations and continue the journey together. Alpha places are limited; an internet connection is required.

How party progress and shared loot work
  • Join through Friends. Open Friends, find a friend by their name tag and join their world or respond to an invitation. Hosts can approve or decline join requests.
  • Solo or together. Your hero plays online in either case. Choose whether friends can join your session; up to four heroes can travel together.
  • Your own loot, your own quests. Every hero gets their own loot, gold and XP, and the kills you share count toward the quests in each hero's own log.
  • Fair fights. Enemies grow tougher for every hero in the party: 1.75 times the health with two, 2.5 with three, 3.25 with four. They hit as hard as in solo play.
  • The host stays in charge. The host can remove a player or make a new code at any time.
  • Your own quest rewards in co-op. Every hero now sees their own reward banners and quest notices on screen.
  • Shared chests. A chest one hero opens opens for the whole party, every hero nearby gets their own loot, and a quest chest counts for every hero in the party.
